Income Trusts are atypical Canadian corporations who chose to become income trusts for specific tax advantages. Income trusts pay very little income tax at the expense of having to disburse the vast majority of their earnings in the form of dividends to the share holders. They are exchange traded and are often the highest yielding stocks on the TSX. Income trusts are normally utility companies, but are also many other types of companies. Typically, they are companies that are not concerned with aggressive growth, but have a solid footing in their industry and do not command lots of capital reinvestment.
Update: So income trusts have pretty much been phased out, right? Not exactly. REITs still have the distinction and the REIT industry is still thriving.
Income Trusts were originally developed for Utility companies to make distributions to investors. Recently, Business Trusts are the main component of the TSX Income trust index. Many corporations completely unrelated to utilities decided to become income trusts. Unfortunately for Canadian income trust holders, Income trusts have been legislated to return to being Canadian Corporations by January 2011. The exception to this tax increase is REITs.
