The Financial Sector in Canada and traded on the TSX is one of the biggest sectors in the nation.

This sector is composed of multiple banks, insurance companies, investment managers, & mortgage loan companies. The banking sector is comprised primarily of the so-called Big-Five Canadian banks. They make up the top five financial corporations on the list below. These five companies are some of the biggest in Canada and make their money from a wide variety of investment activities from credit card loans to mortgages to bank fees. Many individuals consider these banks to be some of the safest Canadian stock investments available.

Some of the larger insurers (Manulife and Great-west life co) are also mainstays in most Canadian portfolios. Financial investment houses like Sun Life are large holders of stocks on the behalf of individual Canadian investors.

If you are interested in investing in this sector there are a number of ways to go about it - ETFs that track the Canadian financial sector. If you want less exposure to volatility, many of these financials - especially the large banks - offer multiple offerings of preferred shares to invest in.

The big five banks are 5 of the biggest corporations in the country and run a virtual banking monopoly some have suggested. Their combined market cap is enormous and their profits robust.

Another very large portion of this sector is insurance, investment management, equity, ratings agencies, the Toronto Stock Exchange itself, investment bankers, mortgage lenders, credit unions and more.

If you are looking to invest in these stocks using various metrics - price to book, price to earnings and other valuation methods, there are many different tools available to you. Some have suggested that there is a credit bubble in Canada and this perhaps should be considered when investing in this sector. One need only to look south when trying to determine the effects of such a bubble.

Below is a complete list of Financial sector stocks traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange in Canada.
